About this book
What if you could hear Hannibal, Socrates, Queen Elizabeth and Dante speak their minds?
In Imaginary Conversations and Poems, Walter Savage Landor brings real people from different ages into invented conversations. Kings, philosophers, soldiers and poets reveal themselves through speech, with no narrator to explain them. This selection pairs those dramatic dialogues with short poems, giving you both the force of argument and the pleasure of clear, polished verse.
The conversations reach into Greece and Rome, where figures such as Hannibal and Socrates face questions of duty and pride. Queen Elizabeth and Dante bring voices from later ages. These are people as Landor imagines them: their words reveal character, while the poems offer a quieter art of clarity, restraint and carefully shaped lines.

In short
Picture a battlefield near Rome. Hannibal rides up to the fallen Roman general Marcellus, shouts for water, and orders his own soldiers back.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Compassion can bind even sworn enemies
The first dialogue puts Hannibal beside the wounded Roman general Marcellus. Hannibal pushes his soldiers back, calls for water, loosens the helmet, and sends for a surgeon.
A Gaulish chieftain interrupts with a greedy claim to the golden chain on Marcellus's horse. Hannibal quiets him with gifts of his own. When the chieftain swears eternal gratitude, Hannibal answers that every treaty carries a time limit. Landor shows a hard commander who knows what loyalty is worth.

What is Imaginary Conversations and Poems about?
It gathers invented dialogues between real people from many ages, such as Hannibal, Elizabeth, Epictetus, and Boccaccio, followed by short poems. Each talk explores a clear question about kindness, power, faith, or the good life.
Who wrote the Imaginary Conversations and when?
Walter Savage Landor, an English writer who died in 1864, wrote them over many years. He used real names from history to give his own views on politics, poetry, religion, and happiness.
Is the book a true record of what these people said?
No. The conversations are invented, though the speakers are real, and Landor draws on history and legend for settings. Their voices carry his opinions, which makes each scene a clever argument in the form of a play.
