About this book
What if keeping your promise means betraying the person you love?
In Baroness Orczy’s I Will Repay, Juliette de Marny carries a vow made to her grieving father: avenge her brother’s death in a duel with Paul Déroulède. But when Déroulède offers her protection, hatred gives way to love. The man she promises to destroy becomes someone who trusts her.
Around them, revolutionary Paris turns suspicion into a threat to life. Noble birth invites danger, and an accusation can lead toward the guillotine. Déroulède’s sympathy for people in peril puts him at risk despite his standing. As Juliette struggles with her conscience, Sir Percy Blakeney—the Scarlet Pimpernel—brings courage and deception into this tightening conflict.

In short
I Will Repay is a novel by Baroness Orczy, the author of the Scarlet Pimpernel tales. It is set in Paris in 1783 and again in 1793, at the height of the Terror, and it carries the English hero Sir Percy Blakeney into a story of oath, love and rescue.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A duel over a careless remark
The story begins in Paris in 1783, in a gaming room where a boy of high birth, the Vicomte de Marny, throws a handful of cards at a man older than himself. The man is Paul Déroulède, a rich outsider who is admitted into noble circles only because of his money. He has made a clumsy remark about a lady the boy adores, and the boy answers with the word coward.
Déroulède knows he has blundered. He would apologize if the code of honor allowed it, and he tells the two soldiers who offer to stand as his seconds that the whole thing is a farce. They hear this as cowardice. They tell him he must fight or leave Paris.
