About this book
What happens when money, family duty and desire pull people in different directions?
In Stories to Enlighten the World, Feng Menglong explores morality, wisdom and human nature through short tales. Merchants, scholars, wives, monks, officials, thieves and lovers share a world where choices carry moral weight. Money presses against loyalty, desire tests duty, and the search for justice brings ordinary lives before those who hold power.
These tales explore the ties between children and parents, husbands and wives, masters and servants. Their subjects include the power of money, the bonds of family and friendship, and the work of judges. Through them, Feng offers a lively picture of Chinese life before and during his own late Ming world, inviting readers to see themselves more clearly.

In short
What would you do if a stranger dressed like your husband looked up at your window? That small mistake starts the first tale in Stories to Enlighten the World, a book of forty stories that moves from bedrooms and pawnshops to law courts and the halls of the dead.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A pearl shirt passes between two men
The collection opens with Jiang Xinggor, a young merchant from Xiangyang. He marries Wang Sanqiao, the loveliest of three sisters, and the two are so close that he keeps putting off a trading trip to Guangdong. When he finally goes, she points to the tree before their tower and says that when it sprouts next spring she will be waiting.
Illness holds him in the south for months. In the new year Sanqiao watches from the front window, and one day she sees a man dressed just like her husband. She stares, he stares back, and both are mistaken about what the look means. The man is Chen Shang, a grain trader, and he cannot forget her face.
