About this book
What if a wish to escape your dull life carried you to Mars on a magic carpet?
Lieutenant Gullivar Jones has little to do on leave in New York. Then a magic carpet carries the restless American naval officer to Mars. In Edwin Lester Arnold’s Gulliver of Mars, an idle wish opens onto an old, dry world of ancient works, watercourses, strange peoples, and rival powers.
Jones arrives as a curious visitor, but his feelings for the Martian princess Heru give him a reason to stay involved. Her fate draws him into local quarrels, where wit and courage matter. Beneath the romance and danger, Arnold explores tired societies, the grip of custom, and what happens when an outsider enters their world.

In short
What would you do if a wish could carry you to another planet? Lieutenant Gulliver Jones, a poor and bored Navy officer in New York, finds out.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A careless wish wakes a dead man's rug
Gulliver Jones, a Navy lieutenant with five dollars and a pile of unpaid bills, walks home through a New York slum. He is angry at his superiors, who have refused him promotion, and he misses Polly, the girl he hopes to marry. His mind is on steak and tomatoes.
A flying shape drops an old man onto the pavement, and the man dies at once. Gulliver takes the body to a hospital and brings home the stranger's rug, which is woven with a strange map of the sun and its planets. That night he cries out that he wishes he were on Mars. The rug rolls him up like a cigar and hurls him out of the window.
