About this book
What if the voyage that threatens your life is also the adventure you never stop loving?
Marlow sits among men who know the sea and recalls his first voyage to the East. At twenty, he serves as second mate aboard the Judea, an aging sailing ship carrying coal toward Bangkok. Captain Beard faces his first command, while delays, damage, bad weather, and leaks turn progress into a struggle.
Then the coal begins to burn, and danger rises from the cargo itself. In Joseph Conrad's short story, the older Marlow sees the ship's frailty and his own lack of experience. Yet memory preserves something else: the fierce delight of a young sailor who welcomes hardship as part of discovery.

In short
What if a voyage exists only to show you that effort does not always bring you where you want to go? That is how Marlow begins his tale.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
An old ship and two old men
Marlow begins with the facts that make his voyage odd. It is his first trip to the East, his first berth as second mate, and the first command of his captain, who is sixty years old. Captain Beard is a small, bowed man with a face like a nutcracker and the clear blue eyes of a boy. The mate, Mahon, is old too, with a snow-white beard and a run of bad luck. Marlow, twenty years old, feels like a small boy between two grandfathers.
Then comes the ship. She is the Judea, about four hundred tons, covered in rust, dust and grime. She has a clumsy windlass and not a scrap of brass. On her big square stern are worn gilding, a coat of arms and the motto Do or Die. Marlow loves it at once. To him it is romance, a voice speaking to his own youth.

What is Youth by Joseph Conrad about?
It follows a young second mate named Marlow on his first voyage to the East aboard an old coal ship, the Judea. Storms, delays and a fire in the cargo test the crew, and Marlow looks back on it all with love.
Who is Marlow in Youth?
Marlow is the sailor who tells the story aloud to four old friends. He was twenty at the time of the voyage and recalls it twenty-two years later. Conrad uses him as a speaker in other works too.
What does Do or Die mean in the story?
Do or Die is the motto painted on the Judea's stern beneath her name. Marlow sees it as a cry of defiance and a creed that the old ship and her crew try to live by through every disaster.
