About this book

What hides inside a nursery rhyme—a village joke, an old belief, or words never meant for children?

In Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales, James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps gathers verses and stories that English children learn by ear across generations. Published in 1849, the collection preserves words passed from nurse to child and from child to child. Behind their familiar rhythms lies a question: what disappears when nobody writes them down?

Nursery songs, lullabies and tales sit alongside rhymes rooted in country life, local customs, weather and belief. Halliwell-Phillipps groups the material by use, with notes on its origins and changes. Some verses carry the names of places and families; others hold a town’s joke or grievance within a few memorable lines.

In short

Why does a ladybird rhyme sound almost the same in England, Germany, Denmark and Sweden? J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps gathered nursery rhymes, riddles, games, charms and a handful of fireside tales, and argued that these scraps are far older than anyone thinks.

Nursery jingles carry real history and old literature

Halliwell-Phillipps opens with a defence of the nursery. Sir Walter Scott, he notes, would rather have one tear shed over Little Red Riding Hood than read a hundred stories about good boys. The author agrees that wild, fanciful lore feeds a child's imagination better than tidy moral tales.
