About this book

Beyond Spain’s cities lies a country of teeming marshes, high sierras, wild animals and patient hunters.

In Wild Spain (España agreste), Abel Chapman and Walter John Buck lead you through marsh, plain and mountain. Their account brings hunting and natural history together, watching birds and beasts at close range while tracing the rural lives woven around these wild places.

Chapman brings the eye of a naturalist, hunter and artist from Northumberland. Buck brings daily knowledge of Jerez and southern Spain. Together they explore wetlands near the mouth of the Guadalquivir, the wild estate of Coto Doñana and mountain ranges that shelter animals already lost from much of western Europe.

What you’ll discover

  • Marshes alive with wildlife Explore the southern wetlands through accounts rooted in close attention to birds and beasts.
  • Into the high sierras Follow the authors from open plains toward mountain country that shelters big game.
  • Two ways of seeing Discover how Chapman’s field experience meets Buck’s deep familiarity with southern Spain.
  • Life around the hunting grounds Meet shepherds, herdsmen and village hunters, with country inns forming part of the rural picture.
  • Animal behaviour up close Share the patient observation that gives these accounts of wild creatures their appeal.

Two Englishmen Who Knew Spain

The book rests on the partnership of two very different men. Abel Chapman came from Northumberland and spent his life in the field. He shot, watched and sketched wild animals in many parts of the world, and he wrote about them with the care of a naturalist.
