About this book
What if a wedding brings no safety, and the enemy you fear can wear another face?
In Gaston Leroux’s The Perfume of the Lady in Black, Mathilde Stangerson has married the loyal Robert Darzac, but fear still shadows her life. Joseph Rouletabille, a teenage newspaper reporter with a sharp mind, returns to help. His rival Larsan is a master of disguise, and the threat he poses makes familiar faces hard to trust.
The pursuit moves from Paris to the sunlit Mediterranean coast and the Fort of Hercule. Sainclair, Rouletabille’s loyal friend, tells the story as the young detective reasons through danger. Mathilde, Darzac and Rouletabille each carry secrets from the past. Beyond the puzzle lies a painful question: what do people hide from those they love?

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A wedding in a gloomy church sets the scene
The book opens on April 6, 1895, in the dark church of St. Nicolas du Chardonnet in Paris. Robert Darzac, a chemist, is marrying Mathilde Stangerson. The wedding is almost secret, and the narrator Sainclair cannot shake a sense of dread.
Two lawyers whisper in the pew beside him. One says he only felt easy about the couple once the death of Frederic Larsan was confirmed, after the steamer La Dordogne burned at sea. Larsan, you learn, was also the swindler Ballmeyer, the man Mathilde married in secret in her youth.

What is The Perfume of the Lady in Black about?
It follows Rouletabille, a young reporter, as he races to protect the newly married Mathilde Darzac from Larsan, a master of disguise believed dead. The action moves from Paris to a fortress on the Riviera, where a body appears in a sealed tower.
Do I need to read The Mystery of the Yellow Room first?
It helps, since the characters and the history of Larsan come from that book. But the narrator recalls the key facts early, so the story stands on its own and you can follow the people easily.
What does the perfume of the Lady in Black mean?
It is a sweet scent that Rouletabille remembers from a veiled woman who visited him at school as a child. It links him to his lost mother, and it guides him toward a painful discovery about his origins.
