About this book
Can a boy who expects kindness from everyone reach a grandfather whose heart seems closed?
Seven-year-old Cedric Errol has little money, a loving mother, and friends along his New York street. Then Mr. Havisham arrives from England with news that changes everything: Cedric is heir to the Earl of Dorincourt. The boy known as Ceddie must leave familiar faces behind for a place in his grandfather's world.
At Dorincourt Castle, Cedric meets a proud, lonely old man who distrusts his American mother. The Earl wants a worthy heir; Cedric wants to make people happy. In Little Lord Fauntleroy, Frances Hodgson Burnett brings these two together and asks whether trust and simple goodness can reach where pride keeps others out.

A loving boy lives quietly in New York
The story opens in a small house on a quiet New York street. Cedric Errol is not yet eight years old. His father, an English captain, died when Cedric was little, and the boy has learned that it makes his mother cry when he speaks of him.
So Cedric cheers her as he can. He brings her picture books and sits beside her on the sofa. He calls her Dearest, just as his father did, and he grows into a thoughtful little man who looks after her.

What is Little Lord Fauntleroy about?
It tells of Cedric Errol, a kind American boy who learns he is the heir to an English earl. He crosses the ocean, wins over his stern grandfather, and changes the lives of the people on the estate.
Why is Cedric called Lord Fauntleroy?
Fauntleroy is the courtesy title given to the heir of the Earl of Dorincourt. After Cedric's father and two uncles die, Cedric is the only grandson left to inherit, so the title falls to him.
Who is Dearest in Little Lord Fauntleroy?
Dearest is Cedric's pet name for his mother, Mrs. Errol. His father used the name for her, and the boy copied it. She lives at Court Lodge, near the castle, after Cedric moves in with his grandfather.
