In short
Imagine a general who wins a war and never fights a battle. Sun Tzu says that is the highest kind of general.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Weigh five factors before any war begins
Sun Tzu opens with a blunt claim. War is a matter of life and death for a state, a path to safety or to ruin, so it must be studied. He names five constant factors to weigh. The first is the Moral Law, which is harmony between ruler and people. The second is Heaven, meaning night and day, cold and heat, and the seasons. The third is Earth, meaning distances and narrow passes. The fourth is the Commander, who needs wisdom, courage and strictness. The fifth is method and discipline.
He turns these factors into questions to ask about both sides. Which ruler is in harmony with his people? Which general is abler? Which side enforces discipline more firmly? With the answers, Sun Tzu says, he can predict victory or defeat. A commentator tells of the warlord Ts'ao Ts'ao, who made a rule against trampling grain. When his own horse shied into a field, he condemned himself to death. The law binds the one who makes it.

What is The Art of War about?
It is a Chinese treatise on strategy in thirteen chapters. It explains how to weigh the facts of a war, save cost, use deception, read ground and enemy signs, lead soldiers and use spies, with the aim of winning without needless fighting.
What does Sun Tzu mean by winning without fighting?
He means breaking the enemy's plans, alliances and will so that he gives way before a battle starts. A whole country or army taken intact is worth more than one destroyed, and it spares your own men and treasury.
Who was Sun Tzu and when was the book written?
Sun Tzu is the name of the strategist said to have written it for Ho Lu, king of Wu, more than two thousand years ago. Later commentators added explanations, and the accompanying notes compare his rules with later campaigns.
