About this book
What happens to love and loyalty when survival leaves no room for a mistake?
In A Mating in the Wilds, Ottwell Binns brings adventure and romance to the cold Canadian frontier. Help is far away, and the wilderness demands more than courage. Food, shelter, warmth and safe travel matter here. Against that pressure, attraction brings another kind of danger: feelings that do not fit the rules.
Survival, forbidden attraction and betrayal shape this story of people tested far from towns and law. Binns sets personal loyalties against open country and hard weather, where trust carries real weight. When another person can hold your life in their hands, a promise matters—and the risk of a broken one becomes hard to ignore.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A stranger in deerskin reaches Fort Malsun
The story opens on a wide northern river in summer. A lean young man in deerskin paddles toward Fort Malsun, a post built as a hollow square. His hair is streaked with gray, though his face is young. When he spots a flag over the post, he stops paddling and lets the current carry him back while he thinks.
He decides the flag only means a steamer is expected, and he camps beyond the post. Then he walks into the post and sees a young man in a monocle. The man looks at him calmly, then starts, and the monocle drops. The stranger is Hubert Stane, who served time in prison for forgery.
