About this book
What good is a sharp mind when war, love, and betrayal pull you in different directions?
In Gaston Leroux’s The Strange Wedding of Rouletabille, a young journalist enters the Balkans as war shakes the region. Rouletabille brings a stubborn character and a mind trained to reason. But amid shifting borders and old hatreds, he faces a world where rumor can carry more weight than thought.
His work takes him toward danger, but the front is only part of the story. Love and betrayal put his heart under strain, and the title holds out the promise of a wedding. Leroux draws on the pace of French newspaper serials, keeping each chapter pointed toward the next.

In short
Can a man who solves every mystery fail to read one young woman's heart? In October 1913, the reporter Joseph Rouletabille gallops through the passes of the Istrandja-Dagh, furious at Ivana Vilitchkov, whom he loves and now believes has betrayed them all.

A detective faces a mystery of the heart
The book opens in full gallop. On October 21, 1913, Rouletabille, the young star reporter of L'Époque, rides hard behind Ivana through the dark passes of the Istrandja-Dagh. The clear logic that has solved crimes around the world fails him for the first time, because this puzzle is a woman.
He has just escaped the Black Castle, where the enemy Gaulow, also called Kara-Selim, held Ivana prisoner and celebrated a wedding with her. Rouletabille saw her with his own eyes unwind the rope that freed the man she swore to kill. Now she rides off after Gaulow, and he follows, torn between rage and love, while also hoping to find a post office for his dispatches.

No. The narrator gives enough background about the Black Castle, Ivana and the reporters, so a reader can start here. Earlier books deepen the picture, but the plot, the characters and the humor stand on their own.
