About this book

A woman arrives with a child and a guarded past. Why does the village think she owes it an explanation?

At the crumbling Wildfell Hall, Helen Graham keeps her past private and guards her young son, Arthur. Gilbert Markham, a young farmer, is drawn to the clever, reserved painter. But their meetings stir village gossip, and curiosity begins to harden into suspicion.

In The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Anne Brontë brings romance into sharp conflict with marriage, money, drink, and a woman's right to act. Gilbert's letter frames Helen's diary, giving her room to tell her own story. At its heart is a mother determined to protect her child, even when others question her choices.

What is The Tenant of Wildfell Hall about?

It tells of a mysterious woman, Helen Graham, who moves into a ruined house with her young son, and of the young farmer Gilbert Markham who falls in love with her while rumours spread. Her diary explains her past.

Who is the tenant of Wildfell Hall?

She is Helen Graham, who arrives with her son, presents herself as a widow, and keeps to herself. She paints for a living and refuses to explain her history. The village speculates about her, and the novel gradually shows the truth.

Why was The Tenant of Wildfell Hall considered shocking?

Readers were startled by its plain account of a husband's drinking and cruelty, and by a wife who leaves him to protect her child. Some critics thought the subject coarse, though Brontë defended her honesty.
