About this book
What happens when a king believes witchcraft threatens both his life and his kingdom?
In Daemonologie, James I sets out his case for believing in witches, magic and spirits. His close interest in the North Berwick witch trials shapes his sense of danger. This short treatise takes the form of a conversation: Philomathes asks questions and raises doubts, while Epistemon answers with arguments that reflect the king’s learning and beliefs.
Across three short books, their discussion moves from forbidden magic and necromancy to witches’ supposed pacts with the Devil, then to the wider world of spirits. James draws on the Bible and considers questions of law and punishment. What emerges is not a lively adventure, but a direct encounter with the reasoning an educated ruler uses to justify witch hunts.

In short
Daemonologie is a short treatise on witchcraft, magic and spirits, printed in Edinburgh in 1597. Its author was James VI of Scotland, who later became James I of England.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A king answers those who doubt witches
James opens with a preface addressed to the reader. He says he writes to prove that devils exist and that witches and sorcerers are real and must be punished. He aims his argument at two authors in particular. One is Reginald Scot, an Englishman whose Discoverie of Witchcraft treated much witchcraft as fraud and delusion. The other is Johann Weyer, a physician from the Low Countries who argued that many accused witches were mentally unwell and deserved pity.
James does not argue that every accusation is true. His claim is that to deny witchcraft altogether is to deny what the Bible plainly teaches. For him the question is settled by scripture first and by experience second. A person who laughs at witches, in his view, is not clever but dangerous, because such doubt lets evil go unchecked.
