About this book
What if keeping an inn alive means putting its sign on a cart and outrunning the law?
In G. K. Chesterton’s The Flying Inn, England’s new rules make a licence to sell drink almost impossible to get. Innkeeper Humphrey Hump and Irish sailor Patrick Dalroy take to the road with a barrel of rum, a great cheese, and a pub sign that refuses to stay put.
Behind the chase stands Lord Ivywood, a politician bent on reforming England by decree. His friend, the mystic Misysra Ammon, charms him with grand ideas. As Hump and Dalroy meet farmers, tramps, clergy, and officials, their comic adventure asks who gets to decide how ordinary people live.

In short
The Flying Inn is a comic novel by G. K.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
An England where inns are doomed
The story opens in an England that looks much like the real one, but the law has changed. A reform movement has made it very hard for an ordinary inn to sell beer or wine. The reformers talk of health, order and progress, and they are backed by money and by influential friends.
The best-known figure on this side is Lord Ivywood, a rising politician. He is polished, clever and proud, and he believes he knows what is good for everyone else. He is drawn to ideas from the East and treats the old English habits of the common people as something to be cleaned away.
