About this book
What if a promise draws you across cold mountains toward a love that refuses to end with death?
In H. Rider Haggard’s Ayesha, the Return of She, Horace Holly and Leo Vincey cannot find peace in England. Years after their encounter with the queen known as She, they set out across Central Asia. Leo believes Ayesha will return to him. Holly follows out of loyalty, though doubt travels with him.
Their search leads into high, cold country, through danger and strange rites. Atene, a mountain queen with ambitions of her own, becomes entangled in their quest. At its heart stands Ayesha: proud, intelligent and dangerous, bound to Leo by a love she believes reaches beyond a single life. What does keeping such a promise demand?

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A dream sends two men across Asia
The story opens in Cumberland, where Horace Holly and his foster son Leo Vincey live in quiet sorrow. They have come home from Africa, where they lost Ayesha, the immortal queen of the Caves of Kôr. One gloomy August night, Leo tells Holly he will end his life, because the longing to see her again is driving him mad.
Holly begs him to live and promises to die with him if he does not. Before dawn, Leo wakes from a vivid dream. Ayesha leads him east over seas and deserts, past a half-moon monastery with a ruined statue of a god, to a peak shaped like a looped cross, the Egyptian sign of life, with fire burning through it.

What is Ayesha, the Return of She about?
It follows Horace Holly and Leo Vincey as they search Central Asia for the immortal queen Ayesha, whom they lost in Africa. They meet monks, a mad Khan and a fierce queen before reaching a Fire Mountain.
Do I need to read She first?
The book recalls the main events of the first story as it goes, so a new reader can follow it. Reading She first adds depth to Holly's grief and to Ayesha's history, but it is not required.
What is the sign of life, or crux ansata?
It is the Egyptian cross with a loop on top, a symbol of life. In the story a mountain pillar takes this shape, and fire shines through it as a guiding beacon for the travelers.
