About this book
What if an election leaves a republic unable to survive its own quarrels?
In Ingersoll Lockwood's 1900; or, The Last President, an American election opens onto a frightening political possibility. Money, debt and class divide the country. Farmers, workers and bankers disagree over what money should be, while the story imagines what follows if the side Lockwood fears takes power.
New York becomes a stage for wealth, poverty and gathering anger. Crowds fill the tale with pressure, and fear hangs over the city. This short political novel carries the urgency of a warning: beneath the election struggle lies a larger question about whether the American republic can hold together.

An election year sets the stage
The novel springs from the American election of 1896. The country was still sore from the depression of the 1890s, and farmers, workers and bankers disagreed bitterly about what money should be. The fight over free silver, which Democrats and Populists backed, and the gold standard, which many business leaders favored, was the great quarrel of the day.
Lockwood was a New York lawyer and writer, and he sided with the fearful, propertied view. He saw the rising movement of the poor and the indebted as a danger to order. The novel turns that fear into a story set in the near future, so the reader meets a possible tomorrow rather than a lecture.
