De qué trata este libro
Work and Win is a boys' adventure novel by Oliver Optic, the pen name of a writer who turned out stories for young readers in the nineteenth century and died in 1897. It follows Noddy Newman, a fourteen-year-old orphan and former vagabond, who lives on the Grant estate at Woodville beside a river. Bertha Grant has spent two years teaching him to read, to behave and to work. The book was written to show a restless boy learning that effort pays, and it carries that lesson through a run of scrapes, chases and sea scenes.
You get a quick-moving tale of a boy who hates chores, runs from the law he does not understand, and finds himself far from home on a schooner bound for the Pacific. Along the way he meets a young girl named Mollie, a captain who cannot leave the bottle alone, and dangers that call for every bit of his daring. Bertha gives him a motto, and the story tests it again and again. Let us begin with the day a careless wish about a boathouse sets everything in motion.

A careless wish and a burning boathouse
The story opens with Noddy Newman sulking over a chore. Ben, the old boatman, has orders from Miss Bertha that Noddy must wash out the boathouse every morning before nine o'clock. Noddy grumbles, stamps his foot and says he wishes the whole building would burn down. Only the thought of Bertha makes him pick up his broom.
Then Fanny Grant arrives. She is Bertha's twelve-year-old sister, proud and headstrong, and she has set her heart on seeing the circus at Whitestone across the river. Her father has refused to take her and Bertha is away in the city for the day. Fanny coaxes Noddy to leave his work, promising to square things with Bertha. He fetches a boat from the Point and rows it to the pier, while Fanny disappears into the boathouse for a few minutes.
As they row away, smoke rises behind them and the boathouse is soon a mass of flames. Noddy is stunned and frightened, because he knows his own angry words will make him the first suspect. He cannot work out how the fire began. They still go on to the circus, but Bertha's sad face seems to float between Noddy and the horsemen in the ring, and he enjoys little of it.
On the way home Fanny admits that she set the fire herself. She weeps and wants to confess to her father, but Noddy begs her not to, saying he would be blamed for putting the idea in her head. She gives way, and the choice nags at her. That evening Noddy makes a bold move of his own, one that shows how much he will risk to shield a friend.
