Para quién es

Readers who enjoy warm family stories, Swiss village life, lively children and quiet faith will feel at home here, as will anyone who loved Heidi and wants more of Spyri's gentle storytelling.

De qué trata este libro

Where Gritli's Children Went is a short novel by Johanna Spyri, the Swiss author best known for Heidi. It is set in the green hills of Switzerland and in a stone house on the Rhine, and it was written for young readers and for the grown people who read beside them. The book follows two homes at once. One is a house of sorrow, where a mother watches her frail daughter fade. The other is a busy village household full of noisy children, small schemes and kind advice.

You will meet a sick English girl named Nora, a worn-out village girl named Elsli, and a bright boy named Fani who loves to draw. You will also meet the lively doctor's children, who bring laughter to almost every page. The book gives you warm scenes, plain faith and a gentle eye for how poverty, illness and friendship shape a child. Let us begin in a sunny garden on the Rhine, where a pale girl waits at a closed window.

A sick child longs for the garden

The story opens on a June morning at a stone house beside the Rhine. Roses climb the walls, a fountain rises in a flower garden, and linden trees dip their branches into the green river. At a closed window sits Nora, a pale girl in her eleventh year. She begs her mother, Mrs. Stanhope, to let her go down to the stone bench under the lindens.

The mother cannot refuse for long. Old Clarissa, the housekeeper who once cared for Mrs. Stanhope as a child, helps lead Nora through the garden, while the servant Friedrich carries her down the stairs so she will not arrive worn out. On the bench Nora watches the waves and says she would love to hop and sing like the birds, but she is always tired. By the time they return, her face is paler than before.

That evening Nora asks Clarissa to recite an old song about Paradise. It tells of a crystal river, white lilies and people who have left the dark valley and know only joy. Nora says the song makes her long to go there. Clarissa answers gently, and then the mother walks in and hears enough to be afraid.

Later Mrs. Stanhope cannot bear what Clarissa suggests, that a child so weak might be better off in a land without pain. We learn that her husband died in England after only a few years, and that her son Philo, a year older than Nora, lies buried under white roses by the lindens. The doctor now advises a summer in the mountain air of Switzerland. Mother and daughter set out in a carriage, and Clarissa stays behind to keep the house, repeating the song to herself in the quiet rooms.
