Para quién es

For readers who have ever felt like an observer in their own life, and anyone drawn to stories about writing, art and belonging.

De qué trata este libro

Tonio Kröger is a novella by Thomas Mann, published in 1903, when he was in his twenties and had just made his name with Buddenbrooks. It follows one man from a boyhood in a northern German port town to his life as a writer in Munich. Mann drew on his own youth in Lübeck and on the split in his family, with a stern merchant father and a mother from the south. The result is a short book about an artist who feels shut out of ordinary life.

You get a compact story told in a few vivid stages: a schoolboy crush, a humiliation at a dance class, a departure, and a long talk with a friend. Along the way you meet the question that runs through all of Mann's work. Can a person who watches life closely ever join it? Let us begin where Tonio does, as a fourteen-year-old waiting outside school for a boy he admires.

A boy who loves the wrong friend

The story opens in a cold northern town of gabled houses and grey winter light. Tonio Kröger is fourteen and walks home from school with Hans Hansen, a boy he admires more than anyone. Hans is blond, blue-eyed and quick on his feet. He rides, swims and does well enough in class without trying very hard.

Tonio is different, and he knows it. He is dark-haired, brooding and given to daydreams. His first name is unusual in that town, which already sets him apart. His father is a respected consul and merchant, and his mother comes from far away in the south. Tonio carries both inheritances, and neither feels like a place to rest.

He wants to share what moves him. Hans has promised to lend him attention, and Tonio wants to talk about Don Carlos, the play by Schiller that has stirred him deeply. Hans listens politely, but he would much rather talk about horses. Tonio senses how little the other boy cares, and he feels the sting of it.

Here Mann plants the pattern that governs the whole book. Tonio loves what is simple and healthy and unthinking, and the people who are like that do not understand him. He suffers more in love than Hans ever will, and he suspects that this makes him the better person. Yet he would trade that suspicion for Hans's easy ways in a moment. Notice how gently the scene is drawn, because the whole story grows from it.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
