For readers who love early science fiction, Gothic atmosphere and sharp social satire, and anyone curious about where robots in fiction began.

De qué trata este libro

Tomorrow's Eve is a French novel by Auguste de Villiers de L'Isle-Adam, published in 1886. It sets a real inventor, Thomas Edison, in a fictional laboratory and asks a strange question. If a man loves a woman's body but cannot bear her mind, could science build him a better woman? The book is a mix of ghost story, satire and science fantasy, and it helped spread the word android.

Villiers wrote it in the years when electric light, the telephone and the phonograph were making ordinary people feel that anything might be possible. He used that excitement to mock his own age, its money, its comfort and its trust in machines. At the same time he wrote a real love story with a haunting note. In the next fifteen minutes you will meet the despairing lord, the Wizard of Menlo Park and the figure he builds. We begin on a winter night in New Jersey, where a visitor arrives at Edison's door.

Edison Receives a Visitor at Menlo Park

The story opens at Menlo Park, New Jersey, where Thomas Edison works among machines that seem close to magic. Villiers does not paint him as a plain businessman. He calls him a sorcerer of the modern age, a man alone at night with wires, glass and the strange new powers of electricity. The first pages show Edison in a dreamy mood, thinking about the discoveries he has made and the ones still to come.

The book lingers over his inventions, above all the phonograph, a device able to catch a human voice and give it back. For Villiers this is not just a clever tool. It suggests that things once thought to belong to the soul, such as speech, can be copied by matter. That idea will matter a great deal later on.

Then a guest arrives, a young English nobleman named Lord Celian Ewald. He and Edison are old friends, and Edison owes him a debt of gratitude. Ewald comes not for a visit but because he is in trouble, and he does not hide how deep it goes.

Edison sees at once that his friend is not well. Ewald is pale, tired and calm in a way that frightens. He has the look of a man who has already made up his mind about something terrible. Edison presses him to speak, and the story of his unhappy love comes out.

The scene is set like a Gothic tale, with a lonely house, a night hour and a secret to be told. Yet the setting is a laboratory, not a ruined castle. Villiers lets the old fear of the unknown meet the new world of machines.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
