Para quién es

Readers who like a clever puzzle, a boy detective, a river setting and a courtroom scene, and who enjoy Huck's warm, joking voice telling an adventure that fits in one sitting.

De qué trata este libro

Tom Sawyer, Detective is a short novel by Mark Twain. It is told by Huck Finn and picks up the spring after he and Tom help free Jim on Uncle Silas's farm in Arkansas. Twain says in a note that the strange events come from an old Swedish criminal trial, with the people changed and the scenes moved to America.

What you get is a mystery that moves fast. There is a steamboat trip, a thief in disguise, two stolen diamonds, a scare in the moonlit woods and a trial where a good man's life hangs on a few words. Along the way you see how Tom reads small clues the way a detective would, and how much he loves an audience. Huck tells it all in a plain, funny voice that makes even a graveyard scene easy to follow. The story begins with a feeling most people have had, a restless spring ache, and with a letter that sends two boys south.

Spring fever sends the boys south

The story opens with a feeling every reader knows. Huck Finn, who tells it, describes spring fever, the restless ache of a boy who wants to be anywhere but home. It is the spring after Tom and Huck helped free Jim from Uncle Silas's farm in Arkansas, and the two friends sit on Aunt Polly's front steps feeling sorry for themselves. Tom is sure his aunt will never let him quit school to wander.

Then Aunt Polly comes out with a letter from Aunt Sally. Huck is ready to cheer, but Tom sits still and says he must be excused for now. Huck is furious until Tom explains in a whisper. If Aunt Polly sees how much he wants to go, she will start imagining dangers and take the offer back. So Tom plays the reluctant boy, his aunt loses her temper, and her own pride makes her send him anyway.

The letter carries news of trouble. A rich neighbor named Brace Dunlap, a proud widower of thirty-six, wanted to marry the daughter Benny. The family told him no, and now he holds a grudge. To keep his goodwill, Uncle Silas has hired Brace's lazy younger brother Jubiter, who is twenty-seven. His odd name comes from a round mole with four small ones around it, which a teacher once said looked like Jupiter and its moons. Jubiter has a twin named Jake, who took to robbery, broke out of jail and has not been heard of in seven years. Most people think he is dead.

What worries Aunt Sally most is the change in Uncle Silas, a gentle, absent-minded preacher. The quarrels with Jubiter have given him a temper nobody knew he had. He dreads the pulpit, and the neighbors have begun to blame him. Tom cannot believe it. This opening sets the whole board: a loved household under strain, a bully with a grievance, a pair of twins and a brother who has vanished.

Questions about Tom Sawyer, detective

What is Tom Sawyer, Detective about?

Tom and Huck travel to Arkansas to visit Uncle Silas and Aunt Sally. On the way they meet a thief in disguise carrying stolen diamonds, and soon a murder charge threatens Silas. Tom uses sharp observation to unravel it.

Do I need to read Huckleberry Finn first?

The story stands on its own. Huck explains who Tom, Aunt Sally and Uncle Silas are as he goes, and mentions freeing Jim only briefly, so a new reader can follow every scene comfortably.

Why is Jubiter Dunlap called Jubiter?

It is a nickname from his boyhood. A teacher saw a round brown mole on his leg with four small moles around it and said it looked like Jupiter and its moons, and the name stuck.
