Para quién es

Readers who love Western adventure, range wars and gunfights, and also anyone drawn to a romance that grows with care between two people from sworn enemy families, set among cliffs, pine forests and open cattle country.

De qué trata este libro

To the Last Man is a Western novel by Zane Grey, set in the Tonto Basin of Arizona in the years after the Civil War. It tells of two Texan families, the Isbels and the Jorths, whose old hatred explodes into open war over cattle, sheep and grass. Grey wrote it as a story of frontier violence, and also of two young people who find themselves on opposite sides of it.

The book opens with Jean Isbel, a young man raised in the Oregon woods, riding into Arizona after a shaky letter from his father. On the Rim above the Basin he meets a ragged, sharp-tongued girl herding sheep, and neither of them knows what that meeting will cost. You get big landscapes, tense standoffs, a besieged ranch house and a love that has to grow in the shadow of a feud.

This summary walks you through the story up to its last turn. We begin with Jean's arrival, the girl on the Rim and the letter that brought him south.

A son answers his father's call

Jean Isbel makes camp in the cedars on a dry ride across Arizona. He has come from Oregon because his father, Gaston Isbel, wrote to him in a shaky hand. The letter asks him to come home, to bring guns and shells, and to listen more than he talks. It speaks of lost stock and of sheepmen moving onto Grass Valley.

Jean is only part way through the forest country when he meets a tall rider named Colter. Colter tells him plainly that he is one of the sheepmen Gaston has angered. He adds that the old man has boasted about Jean's skill with a rifle and his talent for tracking. Jean dislikes the man at once, and it troubles him that he sides with his father before he knows the cause.

We also learn something about Jean himself. He is gentle in the woods and cannot bear unfairness, yet a darker current runs in him, and the letter seems to call it up. His mother had Indian blood, and his father calls on that blood now. The chapter sets up the question of which Jean will answer the call.

As he rides on, the country changes from barren land to pine forest. He finds a lost sheep trail and a camp full of newborn lambs. That camp is where his life is about to change.

The opening gives a feel for the harsh land and for a young man who is already being pulled toward a fight he did not choose.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
