Para quién es

For readers who love planetary romance, quick action and chivalrous heroes, and anyone curious about the roots of modern science fantasy. Flying ships, forbidden love and beasts commanded by thought bring Barsoom to life.

De qué trata este libro

Thuvia, Maid of Mars is the fourth of Edgar Rice Burroughs's tales of Barsoom, his name for a dying, desert Mars of red men, green warriors, flying ships and swords. It was written during the years of the First World War, for readers of pulp magazines who wanted to be carried far from home. This time the hero is not John Carter, the Virginian and Warlord of Mars. It is his son, the young airman Carthoris of Helium.

The book gives you a chase across a whole planet, a love that cannot be spoken, and a strange city where the dead seem to fight. It also gives you a heroine who is far from helpless, with a rare gift for calming wild beasts. If you have not read the earlier books, you can still follow it. Let us begin with the young prince and the woman he is not allowed to love.

A prince of Helium loves a promised princess

Early in the story we meet Carthoris, the son of John Carter and Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Helium. He has his father's strength and his mother's pride.

His trouble is of the heart. He loves Thuvia, a princess of the realm of Ptarth, and she loves him in return. But Thuvia has been promised to Kulan Tith, the ruler of Kaol, in a match with her father's friend and powerful ally. On Barsoom, such promises are matters of state, and breaking one can start a war.

Carthoris longs to claim her. Instead he tries to behave as a man of honor should. The romance is full of long looks, hard silences and speeches that stop short of the truth. Burroughs uses this restraint to make the later danger feel heavier, since Thuvia herself doubts the intentions behind his help.

The setting matters here. Barsoom is a world where water is scarce, cities are proud, and every ruler watches the others. A single insult between thrones can send fleets into the sky. Before a sword is drawn, the reader already feels how thin the peace is.
