De qué trata este libro

A man who looks like a saint is about to be exposed before a torchlit crowd. Through the Land of the Skipetars is an adventure novel by Karl May, set in the Ottoman Balkans. A German traveler named Kara Ben Nemsi rides with his small friend Hadschi Halef Omar, and he tells the tale himself with dry humor. The false holy man Mubarek serves a hidden chief called the Shoet, and his gang of thieves and murderers must be chased across muddy roads, rocky gorges and flooded rivers. Along the way you meet two giant brothers, a village band with a battered trumpet and a host with poison in his kitchen. Cunning, disguise and a few clever tricks beat men who are stronger.

A false saint is unmasked

The story begins in Ostromdscha, where the traveler and Halef are summoned to a night court. The judge, called the Kodscha Bascha, sentences Halef to strokes and prison without hearing him. The old holy man Mubarek sits at the judge's side as if he ruled the room.

The traveler does not wait to be punished. He moves the judge out of his chair, sits down himself and tears open Mubarek's kaftan in the firelight.

The crowd turns from threatening the strangers to cheering them. A calm mind and a bold bluff turn a dangerous trial into a victory, and the humor never lets the danger feel heavy.
