Resumen de Los niños del agua
Para quién es
For readers who love fairy tales with a point, Victorian oddities, and storytellers who speak directly to you. It also suits families reading aloud, with talking creatures, underwater adventures, and lessons in kindness.
De qué trata este libro
The Water-Babies is a fairy tale for children and grown-ups, written by Charles Kingsley and published in 1863. Kingsley was a clergyman, a naturalist and a social reformer, and he wrote the book for his youngest son. It follows Tom, a very young chimney sweep, who is ill treated, unwashed and unschooled, and who finds himself in a very strange place.
The book mixes a moral tale with comic nature writing, jokes about scientists and sharp anger at the way poor children were used in Victorian England. You get a hero who must learn, creatures who talk, and two fairies with very odd names who run a kind of school under the sea. Along the way you meet a world of rivers, salmon, otters and lobsters, and a long trip to the edge of the map. Let us begin with Tom himself, and the life he leads above the water.

Tom is a sweep with no hope
The story opens with Tom, a little chimney sweep who works for a rough master named Mr. Grimes. Tom cannot read and cannot pray. He is never washed, and he is beaten more often than he is fed. He climbs up inside dark, sooty flues, and the work is cruel and dangerous.
Kingsley does not hide how bad this is. In his day boys like Tom were sent up chimneys because they were small enough to fit, and many were hurt or killed by it. The author is angry about this, and the anger shows in the first pages. He also notes that Tom does not know he is badly off, because he has never known anything else.
Still, Tom is cheerful in his way. He plays with other children when he can, and he laughs at small things. He has never been shown kindness, so he does not know what it looks like. That makes him a poor kind of hero, because he starts out rough, careless and a little dishonest.
One morning a small Irishwoman appears on the road and speaks kindly to Tom, and she seems to know more about him than she should. Readers later learn she is more than she seems. For now she plants a small thought in Tom's head: that cleanliness might be something to want. Then Grimes and Tom set out for a great house called Harthover Place, where there are chimneys to sweep.
That is the start of Tom's long change. Before it ends, his whole body and his whole habit of mind will be washed.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
