Los viajes y aventuras del capitán Hatteras in short

The book follows the brig Forward from the docks of Liverpool into the ice of the far north. Its captain stays hidden behind letters until a crisis calls him out. He is John Hatteras, an English sailor driven by one goal, and he leads a mixed crew toward a Pole no one has reached.

What Los viajes y aventuras del capitán Hatteras is about

What would you do if a ship asked you to sail north for years, and would not even tell you where? That is the offer made to the sailors of the brig Forward in Liverpool in 1860. Her owner signs only with the initials K. Z., and her first guide is a large Danish dog.

Jules Verne wrote The Voyages and Adventures of Captain Hatteras as an Arctic adventure built on the real history of polar exploration. The Franklin search, the Northwest Passage and the dream of an open sea around the Pole all appear, and an invented English captain moves through them. You get ice, storms, mirages, a cheerful doctor and a crew pulled between greed and fear.

Para quién es. You will love this book if you enjoy voyages into the unknown, real explorers woven into fiction, clever scientific explanations, and a strong-willed leader facing the ice beside a warm-hearted friend.

A mystery brig leaves Liverpool for nowhere

On April 5, 1860, the Liverpool Herald prints a short notice. The brig Forward will leave the docks the next day, with a captain known only as K. Z. and a mate named Richard Shandon. Her destination is unknown, yet the quays fill with people who leave their work to watch her go.

Sailors on a nearby ship study her like detectives. She is a steamer that depends on canvas, and her build says she is made for ice. Her cargo tells the same story. She carries food and coal for six years, warm clothing, lime juice and plants that fight scurvy.

The crew is chosen with equal care. Each man is English, single, healthy and sober, and the pay is five times the usual wage. Every man signs without knowing where he is going. Then comes the strangest rumor, that the real captain is aboard, and that he is a dog. A good puzzle keeps you reading.

How it ends (spoiler)

Hatteras and his companions reach a volcanic island at the North Pole, which he names Queen Island. He climbs the burning mountain to stand on the exact point of the Pole, and is pulled back from the crater. He has lost his reason. The survivors carry him south, face terrible hardship on the ice, and are rescued by a Danish whaler. They return to England, where the doctor reports the discovery to the Royal Geographical Society.
