Para quién es

This book suits readers curious about how faith feels from the inside: lovers of psychology and philosophy, and anyone who wants a fair, open-minded guide to conversion, prayer, mysticism and saints.

De qué trata este libro

What does a person do when life collapses and the will gives out? William James asks this in The Varieties of Religious Experience, and he answers by listening. A drunkard sits in a saloon with nothing left to sell. A Russian novelist hides a rope from himself. A Quaker walks barefoot through a market town crying woe.

James was a Harvard psychologist and philosopher. He gave these talks in Edinburgh as the Gifford Lectures and printed them in 1902. He studies the private feelings of people who lived their faith most intensely, because the extreme case shows a thing most clearly. You get a tour of human possibility and a method that asks you neither to believe nor to disbelieve, only to look closely and judge fairly.

Idea clave 1 de 10

Judge a belief by its fruits, not its roots

Many religious leaders had unstable nerves, heard voices, or fell into trances. George Fox, who founded the Quakers, walked barefoot through the market of Lichfield crying woe to the bloody city. A reader may think such a man is explained once we call him disturbed.

James calls this habit medical materialism. It explains Saint Paul by epilepsy and Carlyle's gloom by a bad stomach. But every state of mind depends on the body, including a scientist's atheism. So the body cannot sort true feelings from false ones.

What do we use instead? We ask whether an idea feels luminous, fits what we know, and helps us live. Saint Teresa pointed to changed conduct as the evidence of genuine worth. She showed her doubters the jewels the vision had left, meaning her improved character.

For you, this gives a way to read testimony without sneering or swooning. Ask what a state did to a person's character and work. Judge the fruit and leave the root to curiosity.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Las variedades de la experiencia religiosa

What is The Varieties of Religious Experience about?

It studies the private side of religion: conversion, saintliness, mysticism and prayer. James uses real confessions and diaries to ask what religious experience feels like and what it is worth, setting aside churches, creeds and rituals.

What does William James mean by medical materialism?

It is the habit of explaining religious figures away by their bodies, calling Saint Paul epileptic or Saint Teresa hysterical. James answers that all thoughts depend on the body, so origins cannot decide what a belief is worth.

What is the difference between the once-born and the twice-born?

The once-born are healthy-minded people who see life as basically good and need only one birth. The twice-born pass through despair and a divided self, and find happiness only after a deep inner change.

Is The Varieties of Religious Experience about one religion?

No. James draws on Christians of many kinds, plus Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and nonreligious writers. His focus is the shared psychology of personal religious experience rather than the teaching of any one faith.

What is the main message of the book?

Religious experience is a real and valuable part of human life, and it should be judged by its effects on character and action. James adds that people need different kinds of faith, and that a wider self may lie behind these experiences.
