Para quién es
This book suits readers who love folklore, legends and saints, and who enjoy travel writing that follows a road village by village, with mountain scenery and the customs of ordinary people.
De qué trata este libro
What do you owe to a ghost story told by a coachman? In this book, quite a lot. A postilion in the Alps spins a tale about a witch with a flying saddle, and a whole country begins to open up behind it.
Busk and her friends reach Feldkirch with a mountain of luggage, and the postmaster refuses to carry it over the passes. They must turn back, and the driver in his yellow lace talks to cheer them. Rachel Harriette Busk wrote The Valleys of Tirol in the early 1870s. She sets each legend where it happens, and you get a guide who answers to curiosity, with hermits, miners, an emperor stuck on a cliff and a peasant hero.

Old legends deserve a place in travel
Busk opens by facing the sceptic. Why record the supposed foolishness of a vanished age, people ask, when modern learning has swept it away? She answers that legends have won over serious thinkers, and that the study of folktales has grown into a science of its own.
Legends keep what other records lose. They preserve the habits of mind of earlier ages, much as strata preserve the past for a geologist. In Tirol she finds a living store of them, kept by simple farmers who still watch the harvest as a gift from heaven.
She then reaches across to England. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday carry the names of Germanic gods, and so do many villages. Wodan lives on in Wednesbury and Freia in Fridaythorpe. Why should the Norse tales be read less often than the Iliad?
Busk admits that railways and big hotels will change Tirol, and that nobody should wish a people to stay trapped in illusions for the traveller's pleasure. Still, myths are worth studying as a record of how humans have tried to understand the world. The tales are never decoration, so read each one as a window on its valley.
That’s 1 of 7 key points.

Questions about Los valles de Tirol
What is The Valleys of Tirol about?
It is a travel book about the Alpine valleys of Tirol, mixing routes and sights with legends, saints, rulers and customs. Busk follows the road from Vorarlberg through the Inn valley to Innsbruck and Italian Tirol.
Who was Rachel Harriette Busk?
She was an English writer and folklorist who died in 1907. She collected traditions in Tirol and Italy, and she also wrote Folklore of Rome and translated Tirolean stories into English.
Who is Andreas Hofer in this book?
Hofer is the innkeeper and riflemen's commander who leads the Tirolese revolt of 1809 against Bavaria and France. Busk describes his simple habits, his capture, his execution at Mantua and his return home to a tomb in Innsbruck.
Why does Busk spell Tirol without a y?
She explains that Tirol's own people spell their name that way, and that the name comes from the castle above Meran that the Romans called Teriolis. She also dislikes the English habit of saying the Tyrol.
Is it easy to read for someone new to folklore?
Yes, in the sense that most chapters are built from short, self-contained stories told in a lively, personal voice. You can dip into a valley, a saint or a tale, and each one stands on its own.
