In short

  • The Time Traveller is the inventor who explores the distant future in The Time Machine by H. G. Wells.
  • He is curious and brave, but his eagerness to explain things sometimes runs ahead of his understanding.
  • When his machine disappears, his journey of discovery becomes a search for a way home.

Who the Time Traveller is

The Time Traveller lives in Richmond, where he invites guests to hear his ideas about time as a fourth dimension. He has no personal name in the novel, only the title by which his guests know him.

What the Time Traveller wants

He wants to discover what humanity has become, and he arrives expecting wonders after so many centuries of change. The gentle Eloi initially seem to offer evidence that people have overcome poverty and conquered nature. Once his machine vanishes, he must also work out who has taken it and how to recover it.

How the Time Traveller changes

His confidence in a peaceful future weakens as he notices the Eloi's fear of darkness and discovers the underground Morlocks. He begins to interpret this divided humanity through the separation between the rich and the working poor. Yet he admits that his explanations may be wrong, revising his theories as new evidence unsettles them.
