De qué trata este libro
What would you do if your ship froze solid in the Arctic, winter was coming, and no open water lay in sight? In 1596 a Dutch crew faces exactly that on the far edge of Novaya Zemlya, an island chain north of Russia. Their answer is to haul timber across the ice and build a house.
The Three Voyages of William Barents to the Arctic Regions is the account of Gerrit de Veer, who sailed on the second and third voyages and published it in Amsterdam in 1598. You get three summers of searching, one terrible winter, and a journey home in open boats.

Dutch merchants want a northern road to China
By the 1590s the Dutch trade hard in Russian furs, and their merchants dream of reaching China without passing through Spanish and Portuguese waters. A route along the north of Russia and Siberia looks shorter on a map. Many in Amsterdam believe the sea above Asia can be sailed.
The cosmographer Petrus Plancius backs the hope. He says the great cold comes not from nearness to the Pole but from ice drifting out of the Sea of Kara. The towns quarrel over the route. Zeeland and Enkhuizen choose the strait at Vaigats, while Amsterdam sends William Barents around the north of Novaya Zemlya.
His sun readings with the cross-staff prove remarkably accurate, and his men trust him. De Veer opens with a plea that a failed voyage must not end the effort.
The search for a northern passage is a bet on persistence.

Questions about Los tres viajes de Willem Barentsz a las regiones árticas
What is The Three Voyages of William Barents about?
It follows three Dutch expeditions of 1594, 1595 and 1596 that searched for a northeast sea route to China. The best-known part is the winter of 1596 and 1597, when a crew survives on Novaya Zemlya and then escapes in open boats.
Who was William Barents?
Willem Barentszoon was a Dutch pilot born on the island of Terschelling and a citizen of Amsterdam. He commanded the Amsterdam contingent on the first voyage and served as chief pilot on the later two, valued for his navigational skill and astronomical observations.
Is this a true story, and who wrote it?
Yes, it is a true account. Gerrit de Veer, who sailed on the second and third voyages, wrote it and published it in Amsterdam in 1598. It reports daily courses, weather, sun readings and events, and later explorers have confirmed much of his geography.
What is Novaya Zemlya?
Novaya Zemlya means New Land in Russian. It is a long chain of islands in the Arctic north of Russia, between the Barents and Kara Seas. The Dutch sailed along its west coast, and the third voyage ended at its northeastern tip.
Is the book easy to follow?
The daily entries are short and plain, and the dramatic scenes stand out clearly. Bear fights, ice crushing the ship, the winter house and the open boat voyage read as vivid episodes. Nautical details come in small pieces you can skim.
