De qué trata este libro
The Three Sui Quash the Demons' Revolt is a Chinese novel about fox spirits, stolen magic and a revolt that magic makes possible. Luo Guanzhong is credited with an early form of the work, and Feng Menglong, who died in 1646, enlarged it into the forty chapters we read today. It was written for readers who loved marvels set against real history, and it gives you wonders, jokes and sharp comment on how officials and rulers behave.
Here is what you get. A white ape in heaven opens a sealed case, steals a book of magic and carves it into the walls of a cave. Centuries later, in the Song dynasty, a family of foxes, a foundling monk and a drifting Taoist all chase that magic for their own ends. Along the way you meet a doctor who reads a pulse with three taps, a trusting inspector, a miserly young master, a eunuch who marries a fox, and a merchant's daughter who turns beans into soldiers.
This summary follows the story through its first two thirds, then looks at what the book is really about and how it is told. It leaves the final outcome untold. So let us begin where the book begins, with a theft in heaven and an ape who cannot resist a locked box.

A white ape steals heaven's secret book
The story starts small. In the Kaiyuan era of the Tang, an official named Liu Zhiqing has a wife who is sick. A lamp flower comes alive and becomes a three-foot old woman who offers a cure. She then bullies the whole household until a deity shows her to be a macaque. The tale sets the rule of the book: an animal that practices long enough can pass for a person.
Then the book goes back to the age of Wu and Yue. A maiden from South Mountain is called down to train the soldiers of King Goujian. On the road an old man named Lord Yuan tests her swordsmanship with a bamboo cane, then leaps into a tree and flees as a white ape. She is the Goddess of the Ninth Heaven, sent by the Jade Emperor to help Yue defeat its wicked enemy.
The ape kneels with four kinds of long-lasting nuts and begs to be her pupil. She gives him two lead pellets that become a living pair of swords, one male and one female. He learns swordplay from her, and the Jade Emperor later names him Lord of White Cloud Cave, keeper of the secret books of the Ninth Heaven. One small jade case in his care is wrapped in layer upon layer of seals.
While the gods attend the Queen Mother's peach banquet, the ape sits bored and curious. He tears off a seal, fails twice to lift the lid, then prays to his master, and the case opens. Inside is the Book of Ruyi, with 108 transformations, thirty-six for the heavenly spirits and seventy-two for the earthly fiends. He has monkeys polish the cliffs and carves the whole text into the cave walls.
Chapter two is his trial. Thunder gods drag him before a clerk of the Academy of Literary Affairs and the Lord of the Northern Dipper. He argues that a secret carved in stone is hardly a secret, and his honest tone softens both judges. He is spared and made guardian of the cave, with a jade burner and a Fog Curtain that hides the place. Yet the words stay on the wall, and the book hints that a thief will come.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
