Para quién es

You will love this book if you enjoy gothic atmosphere, doomed love stories, court intrigue and vivid old Rome, told in a rich, dramatic voice.

De qué trata este libro

It is a sultry October day in Rome in the year 999. A monk in a gray habit slips through a hidden panel in the imperial palace and talks with the Grand Chamberlain about poison as calmly as men order supper. Within a few pages, an emperor lies sick far away, a pope's days are numbered, and a whole city waits for the end of the world.

The Sorceress of Rome is a historical novel by Nathan Gallizier. It builds a tale of power, desire and betrayal around the young Emperor Otto the Third, the Roman Senator Crescentius, and a woman of dangerous old Roman blood.

Rome waits for the end of time

The story opens in 999, and the whole city believes the year 1000 will bring the end of the world. Gallizier makes this fear the air his characters breathe. Pilgrims pour into Rome from every land to confess their sins and die within the Church.

Rome itself is a ghost of its past. Barons have turned old temples and tombs into fortresses, and the Crescentii family holds Hadrian's tomb, called Castel San Angelo. The papal chair has been bought, bribed and murdered over for decades. A young German king, Otto the Third, has come south with a dream of making Rome the capital of the world again.

The hermit Nilus of Gaeta preaches in St. Peter's that the end is close, and crowds listen as he paints a world rotted by lust and greed. His words give the book its clock. The Romans do not want a German master, so every faction waits for its chance to strike. A man who thinks the world is ending may confess, or kill, or love without caution. Dread of the year 1000 sets the pace of every plot.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
