A boy is stolen from his bed

The story opens in the hot Algerian night. Esperance, the young son of the Count of Monte-Cristo, sleeps in the house of Fanfar, a French colonist. His father sits in the next room, ready to hear the colonist's life story.

A figure in a green cloak slips through the window. He is Maldar, the Sultan, who somehow survived the Count's revenge. He swears the son will pay the father's debt, and fanatical tribesmen carry the boy into the desert.

When Fanfar checks the bed, it is empty and a jeweled dagger lies on the floor. The Count knows whose weapon it is. He leads the chase himself, saying a father has a father's duty, and rides out with Captain Joliette, the Zouave Coucon and the former clown Bobichel.
