Two restless friends leave Washington for Europe
The story begins with a confession. Carmela Rosselli, twenty-five, promises to tell everything and asks the reader to judge her fairly. She is the daughter of an American mother and an Italian marquis, orphaned at fifteen. She now lives with her cousin and guardian, Ulrica Yorke.
Both women are rich, stylish and bored. Ulrica proposes a year abroad, with Monte Carlo in January. Carmela agrees because she wants to escape every place that reminds her of Ernest Cameron, the man she loved and who left her. In a hotel in Nice, two men from Washington greet them. One is Gerald Keppel, son of a steel millionaire, and the other is Reginald Thorne, who plainly admires her.
Ulrica claims she cannot love at all, while Carmela cannot stop loving. From the first pages, this is the tale of a hurt heart as much as a crime.
That’s 1 of 11 key points.
