De qué trata este libro

The Scarecrow of Oz is a fantasy novel by L. Frank Baum, set in the Land of Oz and dedicated to a Los Angeles club called the Uplifters. It joins a girl named Trot and her one-legged sailor friend, Cap'n Bill, to the Oz stories they come to love. It gives you a whirlpool, a talking Ork, a mountain of popcorn snow and a cruel king.

The book begins far from Oz, on a quiet California shore, and moves by strange stages toward a hidden corner of the fairyland. Along the way you meet a gloomy man who finds fault with everything, a lost boy who never worries, and a straw man with excellent brains. You also meet a witch with a frozen-heart spell. If you like clever rescues, funny talk and kind friends, you have come to the right place. Let us begin where the trouble starts, with a hot afternoon and a strangely still sea.

A whirlpool pulls two friends under

Trot is a small, solemn girl who lives on the California coast. Cap'n Bill is her closest friend, an old sailor with a wooden leg who has taught her nearly everything she knows. One hot, still afternoon the two plan to row to the sea caves. Cap'n Bill does not like the look of the sky, but he gives in to Trot.

Halfway across the bay they spot a whirlpool. It is not coming to them, as Cap'n Bill tells her. They are being drawn toward it like iron to a magnet. He pulls so hard that an oar snaps, and the boat spins down toward the great black hole.

Both are thrown into the deep, yet Trot feels unseen arms holding her up. They are flung onto a sandy beach in a glowing cavern with no door to the outside. There is only a dark hole in the rocks at the back.

Cap'n Bill catches a fish with crab bait and cooks it in seaweed, and the two sleep. This opening shows how the pair work together. Trot is bold and ready to explore, and Cap'n Bill is careful and clever with what is in his pockets.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
