Para quién es

Readers who like fairy tales told with a wink, comic villains, royal families behaving badly, and a narrator who chats with the audience. Anyone fond of Victorian humor, pantomime or stories about vanity will feel at home.

De qué trata este libro

The Rose and the Ring is a comic fairy tale by William Makepeace Thackeray, published at Christmas 1854. He drew a set of Twelfth Night character pictures for children in Rome, and he and a friend made up a story to go with them. That story, which he called a fireside pantomime, became this book. It has two rival kingdoms, Paflagonia and Crim Tartary, and a cast of kings, queens, princes, a greedy minister and a scheming governess.

At its heart are two enchanted gifts. One is a ring and the other a rose, and whoever holds one is seen as beautiful and loved by everyone around. A fairy named Blackstick has her own odd views on what is good for the young. You get a quick, funny tale with a teasing narrator who keeps stepping in to talk to you. First, let us visit a breakfast table in Paflagonia, where a king pretends he has the right to a crown.

A usurper king rules Paflagonia

The story opens at breakfast in the palace of Valoroso the Twenty-Fourth, King of Paflagonia. A letter has come to say that Prince Bulbo, heir to the King of Crim Tartary, wants to visit. The King's daughter Angelica is thrilled, because she has heard that Bulbo is handsome, witty and brave. Her father is just as pleased, and he orders new gowns and a costly necklace to mark the event.

The cheerful family has a dark corner, and it is named Giglio. He is the King's nephew and the son of the late King Savio. When Savio died, his brother Valoroso took the crown that belonged to the baby Giglio. Left alone, the King pours himself brandy from an egg cup and argues with himself in blank verse. He decides that what he has taken is his duty to keep.

The court around him is made of flatterers. The Prime Minister, Glumboso, runs the country and holds a vast sum that belongs to Giglio. The Queen likes cards, gossip and fine clothes, and she is kind but weak. Countess Gruffanuff, who was once the Queen's maid, now governs Angelica and acts as if she came from a very old family.

These people have good reason to fear that Giglio will marry Angelica and take the throne back. So Glumboso and the Countess spread slanders about him, and the household slowly turns cold toward the boy. The narrator refuses to let anyone off lightly, and he points out that the King and Queen share every fault they blame on their nephew.

That’s 1 of 7 key points.
