Para quién es
For readers who love puzzles solved by reasoning and evidence, and anyone curious about how forensic science first met the courts.
De qué trata este libro
The Red Thumb Mark was published in 1907 and is the first novel by R. Austin Freeman to feature Dr. John Thorndyke. Freeman was a physician who had worked as a colonial surgeon and later wrote detective fiction. He gave his detective a profession that fits the science of the day, a medical lawyer who lectures and gives evidence in court. The book gives you a crime puzzle built on a real question. Can a fingerprint be trusted as proof that a person did something?
The story begins with a robbery in London and a bloody thumb mark left at the scene. The mark points to a young man named Reuben Hornby, and the police think the case is closed. Thorndyke is brought in to defend him. The tale is told by his friend and colleague, Dr. Christopher Jervis, who watches the great man work. You will meet a detective who prefers the microscope and the laboratory to hunches. You will also see how a new kind of evidence could be questioned. First, let us look at the crime itself and the mark that seems to settle everything.

A robbery and a bloody thumb mark
The story opens with a crime that looks simple. A safe has been opened and valuable diamonds are gone. The family and the police want to know who could have done it, and the first answer seems plain. Among the papers at the scene there is a mark made in blood, and it is the print of a thumb.
The print is compared with the thumbs of the people who might be guilty. It matches that of Reuben Hornby, a young man who has money troubles and a family connection to the place that was robbed. To the police this is more than a clue. At this date the fingerprint system was still new, and officials at Scotland Yard spoke of it as nearly beyond doubt.
Reuben is arrested. His situation grows worse because he does have reasons that look like motives, and because his own account does not seem to clear him. Those around him begin to fear that the evidence is stronger than his word. The reader is shown from the start how easily a life can be settled by one small mark on paper.
Yet Reuben insists he is innocent, and the people who love him believe him. That belief sets the whole book moving. The problem is no longer only who took the diamonds. It is whether the one piece of proof that condemns him can be trusted at all.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
