A first victory that haunts the victor

The Revenge, a privateer with fourteen guns under Captain Weatherall, sights a large French ship at daybreak. She carries twenty-four guns, a rich planter's fortune, his wife and his seventeen-year-old son. The planter fights like a lion and kills several English sailors with his own hand.

The English board twice. Weatherall leads the second attack and wins the deck. The planter still stands in the cabin doorway and refuses quarter. The narrator fires a pistol to save his lieutenant, and the planter dies. His wife collapses in a faint on his body.

The narrator is shaken. He asks whether slaughter made lawful by the quarrels of kings can be right. Reason, religion and humanity say no. Yet work on deck soon crowds out his doubts. The widow never forgets him, and she hates him whenever she sees him.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
