De qué trata este libro
A king lies dying and no poison can be found. So begins The People of the Black Circle, a short sword and sorcery adventure by Robert E. Howard, who wrote it before his death in 1936. Conan the Cimmerian roams the border between the hot plains of Vendhya and the cold crags of the Himelians. There a queen swears revenge, a barbarian bows to no throne, and wizards hold a mountain. Spies, hillmen and nameless things close in from every side.

A king dies by sorcery and a vow
King Bhunda Chand lies dying in Ayodhya, the capital of Vendhya. No spear has touched him and no poison could have reached him, though twenty tasters guard his food. His sister, the Devi Yasmina, is sure the cause is black magic.
Nearby, Khemsa, a man in a green turban, serves the Black Seers of Yimsha. He explains that a lock of the king's hair gave the Seers a path to his spirit. In a last clear moment, the king tells Yasmina that wizards mean to fix his soul in a night creature.
He begs her to end his life, and she drives her dagger into his chest. She learns who killed him and swears to destroy the Black Seers. To do it she needs a man who does not fear their mountain.

Who is Conan in this story?
Conan is a Cimmerian barbarian who has come to the Himelian hills to gather a following and now leads the Afghuli tribe. He is strong, direct and shrewd, and he treats wizards like any other enemy.
What is the Black Circle and who are the Seers of Yimsha?

No, it is fiction set in an invented world of kingdoms and tribes. Robert E. Howard wrote it in the 1930s, before his death in 1936, as one of his Conan tales.

No. This story stands on its own. It explains who Conan is, why he is in the hills and what he wants, and its chapters move quickly from one scene of danger to the next.
