De qué trata este libro
What does a king want with four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie? Why does a Quaker insist that the cow must jump under the moon, not over it? These puzzles sit inside one small book, The Nursery Rhymes of England, gathered by James Orchard Halliwell.
It holds hundreds of rhymes, jingles, riddles, games and songs that English children have chanted for generations. Halliwell sorted them into eighteen classes and added notes naming the old manuscripts, plays and song books where lines first appear. His preface argues that absurdity is just what draws the very young. You get the shape of the whole collection, class by class, and the stories behind the best-known rhymes.

Kings and queens march through the first rhymes
The first class is called Historical, and it packs English rulers into a few lines each. Halliwell opens with Old King Cole, a merry old soul who calls for his pipe, his bowl and his three fiddlers. A note says old chroniclers placed a King Cole in Britain in the third century.
Other rhymes follow the crown through the centuries. King Arthur makes a bag pudding and stuffs it with plums. Robin Hood waits in the green wood while Little John goes to town. The mood grows darker with the Gunpowder Plot, and with a man at Charing Cross who learns that a black horse carries King Charles the First.
The notes matter as much as the verses. Halliwell cites manuscripts in the British Museum and admits when a reference is lost. A child hears a bouncy tune, yet the words keep a trace of real people. Nursery rhymes carry small pieces of English history in a form a child can sing.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
