Para quién es

This book suits readers who love true confessions, prison and military life in nineteenth century Italy, and the raw voice of a man telling his own story.

De qué trata este libro

At noon on September 17, 1868, an eighteen-year-old fires a pistol in a public square in Parghelia, in Calabria. By evening he is crouched behind a staircase in his uncle's house, listening to the carabinieri search the rooms.

The Novel of a Born Criminal is the life story of a man who signs himself Antonino M. He writes it for his sons in letters from 1888 and 1889, with a last prison letter from 1892. You will meet a prison split between two gangs, a cholera epidemic, a trial where the witnesses are dead men, and two very different captains.

A prisoner writes to his sons about fate

The book opens with proverbs about destiny. Who is born round cannot die square, and the first mistake leads to an abyss.

The first letter is to a little boy named Fernando Antonio. The father tells him not to weep for an unhappy parent, but to be strong and proud. He asks the boy to love God, help the poor, and protect his sisters. The tone swings between tenderness and a curse.

The last letter turns darker. The writer orders his son to hate his brother's family for generations. The same man offers gentle advice on virtue and then a command to hate. This is not a neutral record. It is one man's case for himself, addressed to a jury of his own children.

This life story is a father's warning and a plea for judgment, so every scene is shaped by the need to be understood.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
