Fogazzaro's The Mystery of the Poet is a love story set down as a private manuscript, written in 1881 for one faithful friend. Twice a poet dreams of a gentle voice with a foreign accent. In 1872, at a mountain hotel above Lake Lugano, he hears it in the dark. It belongs to a young woman named Violet Yves. The story carries him over the Alps to Nuremberg, Eichstätt and the Rhine.

A secret written down for a friend
The book opens with a frame. Fogazzaro writes that a lady has sent him a manuscript left by a dead writer, and she wants it printed as a novel with the hero unnamed. He agrees.
Then the poet speaks. On All Souls Day, 1881, he sits in a lonely villa with fog at the windows and decides to write the secret that is the life of his soul. He addresses one dear friend, and he asks her to tell the truth if lies are ever printed.
He then describes the dream that rules him. Climbing out of an abyss, he is drawn upward by a gentle voice with a foreign accent. He wakes in tears, sure the voice truly exists. At the time he is tangled in a joyless affair with a married lady, and he confesses it with shame.
