De qué trata este libro

A girl looks at a river in the Highlands, and the whole world turns green. Then it goes black. The Mystery of the Green Ray is a wartime thriller by William Le Queux, a British writer who made his name with spy and invasion stories. It is set in August 1914, in the first days of the war with Germany. Ronald Ewart, a young London barrister with few clients, tells the tale himself. It runs from the Thames to a night train and on to a lonely sea loch. A cheerful, apparently American neighbour, an eye specialist and a loyal friend with a weak heart all try to find out what is happening.

Four friends and a war on the river

The book opens on the Thames on Bank Holiday, the third of August 1914. Four friends are making their yearly river trip in two punts. They are Ronald Ewart, a young barrister, Dennis Burnham, a huge athletic man, and two cheerful companions, Jack Curtis and Tommy Evans. That night they agree that war with Germany cannot be avoided and that they must all enlist.

Ronald confesses his own trouble. He loves Myra McLeod, the daughter of an old general. The General refuses an engagement because Ronald is a briefless barrister with no money. Ronald plans to travel to Scotland and set Myra free.

Then Dennis shares his secret. An illness years ago left him with a weak heart, and the army will turn him away. Ronald asks him to avoid reckless risks, and Dennis gives his word. The narrator hints that this promise will one day be broken to save someone dearer than life.
