De qué trata este libro
The Mysterious Island is an adventure novel by Jules Verne, the French writer who died in 1905. It follows five men and a dog who flee a besieged Confederate city in a storm balloon in March 1865 and fall onto an unmapped island in the Pacific. They arrive with no tools and no weapons.
What they do have is an engineer. Cyrus Harding knows chemistry, geometry, metalwork, and machines, and he teaches his friends to rebuild a civilized life from clay, ore, sand, and sunlight. Verne fills the pages with working methods, from baking bricks to measuring a cliff with a stick, so you learn how things are made while the colony grows. Under all that labor runs a puzzle, because strange events keep helping the settlers and nobody can say who is behind them.
This summary walks you through the first years on the island, the tricks that keep the castaways alive, and the dangers that reach them by sea and by land. It stops before the secret itself. Let us begin on a stormy afternoon high above the ocean, where a balloon is sinking fast.

A Storm Balloon Carries Five Escapers
The story opens in March 1865, in the middle of a hurricane that rages for days across the world. A balloon spins over the Pacific with five passengers, and it is losing gas through a tear in its silk. The men throw out sandbags, guns, food, and even their pocketknives to stay in the air. At last they cut away the basket and cling to the netting, staring down at the waves.
Verne then explains who these people are. They are Union prisoners held in Richmond, a city under siege in the Civil War. Captain Cyrus Harding is a Massachusetts engineer of about forty-five, calm, strong, and trained in many skills. Gideon Spilett is a reporter for the New York Herald who once telegraphed chapters of the Bible simply to keep the wire busy and beat his rivals.
Neb is Harding's servant, a freed man who refused to leave his master and slipped into the besieged city to find him. The sailor Pencroft is stuck there too, together with Herbert, a fifteen-year-old orphan who loves natural history. Pencroft notices a balloon that Southern officers meant to fly out of the city, and the storm keeps it tied to the ground. He proposes stealing it on a night of wind and sleet, and Harding agrees at once.
They slip into the dark square, climb into the car, and cut the ropes. Harding's dog Top leaps aboard at the last moment, and Pencroft decides one more passenger will not matter. The wind carries them for five days over lands and seas they cannot see. When the balloon sinks toward the surf, it is Top's bark that announces land.
They crash onto a sandy shore, but one traveler is missing. A great wave has swept Harding off the netting, and the dog has jumped after him. His friends search the dark beach, calling his name until they reach water on every side and understand they stand on a small islet. The opening chapters set the stakes plainly: five men, a lost leader, and nothing to rely on but their wits.
