Para quién es

You will enjoy this book if you like warm friendship stories, summer camps, mountain trails, cheerful old cars and gentle mysteries, and if you love a tale where kindness and a good joke solve most problems.

De qué trata este libro

Why would anyone sign up for a camp called Sunrise, when the sun hides behind a mountain until the morning is half gone? Billie Campbell has an answer, and she needs it, because her cousin Helen will not budge. This is the opening quarrel of The Motor Maids at Sunrise Camp, a summer adventure for young readers by Katherine Stokes.

Four worn-out girl friends and their faithful blue car, the Comet, head for a log camp in the Adirondack Mountains. Rest is not what they get. A silent cook, a bog that swallows the trail, a barefoot mountain girl with a secret, and a mob at the door all wait there.

Billie talks her cousin into camp life

The book opens with a battle of wits in a drawing room. Miss Helen Campbell, a dainty sixty-year-old spinster, hears the words Sunrise Camp and imagines tents, mosquitoes and tin cups. Her young cousin Billie, eighteen and full of plans, answers every worry one at a time.

Billie explains that the camp is a log house with one great room, a screened sleeping porch, and water piped from the mountain top. Her cousin groans at each detail, but when Billie says the family will be together, the little lady softens and agrees.

The four Motor Maids need the trip. Nancy has also ordered a fancy mountain outfit with a narrow skirt and a pheasant feather, and her friends cannot stop teasing her.

The first evening is a gentle comedy. The girls arrive hot and gloomy, meet the silent Mr. and Mrs. Lupo, who will cook and guide, and sit down to a candlelit supper. Then a stranger appears at the screen. He is Percy St. Clair, an old friend sent as a surprise. The next morning Billie laughs so she will not cry when her father drives away. Her tears come anyway.

Good humor can carry a person through a change she dreads.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.
