Para quién es

For readers who love exploring belief, knowledge and evidence, and anyone curious about pragmatism and how ideas are tested in experience.

De qué trata este libro

The Meaning of Truth is a book of essays by William James, the American psychologist and philosopher. It came out in 1909 as a sequel to his lectures called Pragmatism. James gathered articles he had written over many years, most of them replies to critics who thought his view of truth was careless or even dangerous. The book is his attempt to say, again and more clearly, what we mean when we call an idea true.

The question sounds simple. Most people say a belief is true when it matches reality. James agrees, but he asks what matching actually comes to. Is it a mysterious tie between a thought and a thing, or something we can watch happen in life? In this summary you will meet his answer, the objections it met, and the replies he gave. You will also see why a book about belief reads like a defence of ordinary good sense. Let us begin with his central claim, that truth is something ideas earn by the way they work.

Truth is what ideas earn by working

James begins with a plain claim. A true idea is one that we can use, test and live with, and a false idea is one that fails us when we try it. He does not say that anything comforting is true. He says that the difference between true and false must show up somewhere in experience, or it is no difference at all.

His method comes from a rule he took from his friend Charles Peirce. To understand an idea, ask what practical difference it would make if it were true. If two ideas lead to exactly the same results in every possible experience, then arguing over them is empty. If they lead to different results, then the difference is where their meaning lives.

Applied to truth, this rule gives a striking result. Truth is not a fixed stamp placed on an idea from the outside. It is something that happens to an idea as it is tested, confirmed and put to use. James likes to say that ideas become true, because they are made true by events.

This can sound odd, so he leans on ordinary cases. You believe a path leads to the lake, you follow it, and you find the lake. Your belief guided you to what it spoke of, and that guidance is what its truth consisted in. The rest of the book defends and sharpens this picture against the many ways people have read it wrongly.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about El significado de la verdad

What is The Meaning of Truth about?

It is a book of essays in which William James defends and explains his pragmatic theory of truth. He argues that an idea is true when it can be verified and when it guides us successfully through experience.

What is the pragmatic theory of truth?

It says that the truth of an idea lies in its practical consequences. A true belief leads us well among real things, can be checked by experience, and fits with the rest of what we know.

Is The Meaning of Truth a sequel to Pragmatism?

Yes. James published it in 1909 as a follow-up to his 1907 lectures called Pragmatism. It collects essays written in reply to critics who had misunderstood or attacked his view of truth.

Does James say that whatever works is true?

No. He says an idea must fit all the facts and earlier beliefs, and reality can always push back. Comfort alone does not make a belief true, and false beliefs eventually fail us.

Is The Meaning of Truth hard to read?

It is clear and lively in style. The essays answer particular critics.
