Para quién es

Readers who love romantic mysteries, letters and disguises, sunlit travel through Naples, Venice and Florence, and cheerful friendships will feel at home here. It suits anyone who enjoys a love story that grows from a single song.

De qué trata este libro

A bareheaded man runs into a New York fog at one in the morning, chasing a song. That is how The Lure of the Mask begins. A soprano voice drifts under the window of John Hillard, a rich bachelor who dreams of the Italy where he was born, and then it vanishes before he sees a face.

Harold MacGrath wrote this romance of mystery and travel, and it moves like a good adventure. It carries you from a New York club to a blindfolded dinner, then across the sea to Naples, Venice, Monte Carlo and the hills above Florence. You meet a spendthrift friend, a loyal servant with a dark purpose, a stranded troupe of singers, and an officer with a scar.

A voice in the fog wakes a bachelor

The story opens on a damp January night in New York. John Hillard, aged thirty-three, sits at his dark window dreaming of red roofs and cypresses in Italy. Then a rich soprano voice rises out of the mist. Hillard leans out and cries a single syllable, and the song breaks off.

He runs into the street without his hat, but the singer dissolves into the fog. A policeman tells him about a jewel thief they call Lady Lightfinger. Hillard never saw the singer's face, yet she stays in his mind. Back indoors, he admits that he is lonely.

That night Hillard does something rash. He writes a notice asking the lady who sang to contact the gentleman at the window, and he gives his club as the address. By morning he is half ashamed, but a toss of a coin lets it stand.

One small sound can wake a life that has been standing still.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
