Para quién es

You will enjoy this book if you like history told through families, love stories pulled by loyalty and conscience, and a warm portrait of Cromwell.

De qué trata este libro

What happens when two best friends stand on opposite sides of a war, and each loves someone the other cannot forgive? That question opens The Lion's Whelp, a historical novel by Amelia E. Barr, set in England in the years of Oliver Cromwell. On a quiet Cambridgeshire afternoon, Jane Swaffham sits with a half-finished lavender bag while her father and brothers fight in Scotland.

Barr places two invented families, the Swaffhams and the de Wicks, around a Cromwell who prays before battle and weeps over lost friends. You get a love story, a tale of spies and secret warrants, and a portrait of a nation slowly changing its mind.

Two old houses stand on opposite sides

Swaffham Manor House is so old that the neighbors call it simply Swaffham, as if the house and the family were one person. Captain Israel Swaffham, a friend of General Cromwell, is away in Scotland with his three sons. His wife Martha and his daughter Jane keep the house and trade verses from the Psalms to steady each other.

Matilda de Wick arrives to visit Jane, and another quarrel about Cromwell follows. The two girls love each other, and they cannot stay off the subject for ten minutes. Jane calls him brave as a lion, Matilda calls him a hypocrite, and a kiss of peace follows each quarrel.

At de Wick Park the mood is darker. The old Earl has lost two sons fighting for the King, and his last son Stephen serves Charles Stuart. Neither house is made a villain, and each has paid for its loyalty in blood.

Two honest loyalties can live in neighboring houses and still be set on a collision.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
