De qué trata este libro
The Lilac Sunbonnet is a Scottish romance by S. R. Crockett, set in the hill country of Galloway in the early nineteenth century. It tells how a young divinity student from Edinburgh, bred on Hebrew and strict church doctrine, falls in love with a farm mistress who whistles with two fingers and wears a lilac sunbonnet.
Crockett fills the book with the speech and humour of a Scottish parish. You meet a gravedigger who courts with rehearsed speeches, a half-witted wanderer with a fierce loyalty, a grandmother who loves to remember her dashing past, and a maid with her own plans. Behind the comedy lies a quiet trouble about a family secret and the narrow rules of a small church.
Over the next few minutes you will follow the story from the blanket washing at Grannoch bridge to the night of the hill gate and the long road to Edinburgh, and see what the book is really about. Let us begin where Ralph Peden first lies beneath a broom bush with his Hebrew books.

A student hides from a whistling girl
Ralph Peden arrives in Galloway on foot, carrying a knapsack of Hebrew and Greek books. On the road he meets Jess Kissock, a dark-haired girl who has been a lady's maid in England. She carries part of his bag, and he feels no gladness at being walked home by so handsome a stranger.
He is staying at the manse of Dullarg with the minister Allan Welsh. Ralph's father, Gilbert Peden, leads the small Marrow kirk in Edinburgh. He has written a letter that ends in a cry. Does the lad have a heart at all?
On his second day Ralph lies in the heather above the Grannoch water with Luther and a Hebrew lexicon. He has been raised to think a professor's opinion matters more than any woman's. Then a girl comes up from the bridge carrying two pails, and he cannot look away.
This is Winsome Charteris, mistress of Craig Ronald farm, famous for her butter and her golden hair. She whistles with two fingers to call her dogs. Ralph is so shocked and so charmed that he flees in a panic when he finds a blanket washing under way, leaving his books behind him in the gorse.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
